I don't care what your drywall water damage categorically is, the first thing that were going to need to do is to find out where the water damage is categorically coming from. The most base culprit, will be a roof leak or a plumbing water furnish pipe that is leaking. Let's get down to the bottom, literally. That's where most of the drywall water damage repairs will need to be done.

If you have water leaking from your roof, there's a good opportunity that the drywall ceiling will be damaged and if it has an acoustical or popcorn type ceiling texture on it, a large area of the ceiling texture will need to be scraped off or removed and then re-sprayed after the water damage repairs have been made.

If your ceiling is smooth, this will be the easiest ceiling heal that you can make, most of the time. Sometimes people get the illusion that a level water damaged ceiling from a roof leak, will be easier to fix and their right. The qoute is, after the heal has been made, if it isn't done properly, the heal will stick out like a sore thumb.

Now what about a water damage ceiling that has a light texture or a heavy texture. This will commonly be the hardest ceiling heal to make. It's difficult to match some types of ceiling textures. The heavier the texture, the harder it will be to repair. If you have a lightly sprayed orange peel type texture, you can count yourself lucky. This heal will commonly be easier to halt than a level ceiling repair.

You heal the water damage ceiling, and you don't like how it looks. Here's the best way to fix this problem. You will need to level out the whole ceiling, using drywall joint compound, until it is totally flat or level or scrape all the acoustic old ceiling texture off and start from scratch.

Once the whole ceiling is smooth, you can apply your new texture or acoustic ceiling. Some contractors will categorically figured the job that way, just to save themselves a view of headaches later.

If there is other water damage to the ceiling, you might even think about removing all of the drywall, replacing it and re-texturing the whole ceiling.
